The Norwegian Forest Cat is a fairy cat with a large fluffy tail. Its name is found in 1835 in popular legends. Vikings are supposed to have used this cat against rats in their Drakkars, in their travels to and from the East.

Their ancestors are said to be born near the Caspian sea and arrived in Scandinavia in the VIIth century.

The first standard was written in 1972.

Its breeding started in 1930 in Scandinavia.

Mrs Briole discovered and brought two cats from Scandinavia to Fran in 1982. In the USA, the standard was established in 1984. In Germany, Mrs. LELEITHNER discovered it by luck in 1978.
