BIRMAN CAT
The Birman Cat received official recognition in France in 1925 : they
were called either BIRMAN or SACRED CAT OF BURMA, their official names in 1950.
In the past, the Birman cat had a long head with a long nose : by
selection, the head became rounder, the nose became straight (Roman profile),
the cheeks became broader.
The Birman kitten is born white. Its nose gets colors at about 6 weeks-2
months, the chin get its definitive color a bit later.
STANDARD :
The body is rather heavy, a bit long on short and strong,
well-proportioned feet. Males are more massive than females.
The skull has strong bone architecture, the cheeks are full and round,
the forehead is slightly convex. The nose is not as straight as for the Siamese,
nor have a stop like the Persian. It must have a slight dip marked by the hair.
The chin is strong. The ears are small and round : the upper head is wide. The
whiskers are long and thick.
The eyes are dark blue, slightly round or oval.
The coat is long or half-long according to the body part. It is very long
on the back and the sides, few under-coat, silky. On the face, the hair is
short, longer on the cheeks. Full ruff around the neck.
The Birman’s colors have the same characteristics as the Siamese : the
face, ears, feet and tail are brown for the SEAL color; the rest of the coat and
the body have the color of a very pale egg shell; the back is golden beige for
all types of color.
Gloves : Birmans have white feet. The white of the gloves is absolutely
pure: on front feet, they must stop where the fingers start. The white tapers to
an end on the sole face, and may not go beyond the middle. The standard
tolerates slightly higher back gloves. The key point in gauntlets is their
regular repartition and the symmetry of the “gloves”.
White spots in the brown parts disqualify the cat in a competition. Cats
showing this default should not be used as breeders.
The tail is bushy, medium in length. No break, no knot.
